The permanent exhibition of the German Institute for Animated Film presents numerous original exhibits, photos and documents that were rescued in the 1990s from the holdings of the former DEFA studio for animated films in Dresden. Hundreds of puppet figures, props, drawing, silhouette and flat figures, supplemented by many film examples, illustrate the cinematic work that was created in Dresden from 1955 to 1992. The show also explains the basic animated film techniques and the creation of puppets and films. A separate chapter is dedicated to the indispensable role of sound in DEFA animated films and shows the diverse creative possibilities of using sounds, speech and music to create a wide variety of worlds.

In regular special exhibitions at the same location, the DIAF presents positions of historical as well as contemporary national and international animated film.
