The great merit of the physicist Prof Dr Werner Hartmann (1912-1988) lies above all in his initiative for the development of microelectronics in East Germany. From the early 1960s onwards, he carried out pioneering work in this field, having previously been very successful in other high-tech sectors with his contributions to television and nuclear radiation measurement technology. With his arbitrary dismissal and humiliation, the pioneer of microelectronics in the GDR had his work brutally cut short in 1974.

As a young physicist, Hans Becker had worked at the Dresden research institute "Arbeitsstelle für Molekularelektronik", founded by Werner Hartmann, since 1963. There he witnessed and helped to shape the beginnings of microelectronics. Since 1986, Becker has been committed to honouring and rehabilitating Werner Hartmann. With the support of the VDE Dresden e. V. and the Dresden Technology Collections, the material from his research, lectures and publications has now been used to produce a biography that comprehensively honours the life and work of Werner Hartmann.
