A cooperation of the Dresden Technology Collections with HELLERAU - European Centre for the Arts, Kunstagentur Dresden and Portraits Hellerau e. V.
PORTRAITS, the international competition for portrait photography, was launched as a cooperation between HELLERAU - European Centre for the Arts and Kunstagentur Dresden. As co-organiser, the Dresden Technology Collections have been showing the PORTRAITS annual exhibition with the four winning series, including the works of this year's residence prize winner Sitara Thalia Ambrosio, in the large exhibition space and at various locations in the building since 2020.
32 photographers from sixteen countries (the USA, Malta, Australia, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, Mozambique, the Netherlands, Japan, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Finland, Ukraine, China and Germany) will be presenting their contributions. They were selected by an expert jury from applications submitted from over 50 countries.
"SURFACE", the theme of the year, initially addresses the simple fact that photography records, reproduces external structures, registers details. To surface also means " to emerge", "to come to light". The contributions to the exhibition make different offers in their choice of photographic means, in their aesthetics, in their choice of subject matter. They also use the portrait as a medium of design, stylisation, deliberate change and thus as a setting for changing concepts of value and beauty. The photo series on display delve beneath the surface, tell stories and uncover secrets. The photographic portraits are the result of an insatiable drive: to create closeness face to face, from person to person.
