A cooperation of the Dresden Technology Collections with HELLERAU - European Centre for the Arts, Kunstagentur Dresden and Portraits Hellerau e. V.
PORTRAITS, the international competition for portrait photography, was launched as a cooperation between HELLERAU - European Centre for the Arts and Kunstagentur Dresden. Since 2020, the Dresden Technology Collections have been co-organising the PORTRAITS annual exhibition in the large exhibition space and at various locations in the building, showing the four winning series, including the works of this year's resident prize winner, Svante Gullichsen (Finland).
The theme of the competition was "Counterparts".
29 photographers from fifteen countries presented their entries. They were selected by an expert jury from applications submitted from over 50 countries.
Now in its seventh round, the competition focuses on an elementary situation in photography such as human perception and action. In addition to literal "likenesses", there are also ideas and concepts that focus on contradiction, on opposites - on the opposite image, the opponent.
A second focus of the submissions can be outlined with the term "identity". Origin plays a role, belonging to a group, a family. Some works deal with the topic of violence, with the often controversial means of protection from danger and prosecution.
The PORTRAITS are characterised by individual photographic concepts and successful contributions to the theme of the image of man in the present. The large number of participants worldwide shows that the competition has now become part of the unrestricted global exchange of images.
The Portraits - Hellerau Photography Award 2022 is the most important international exhibition for portrait photography in Germany.
The project is supported by Tiefenbacher Rechtsanwälte, the international auditing and consulting firm Mazars, the OBERÜBER KARGER communications agency as well as other sponsors and many volunteers.
