A cooperation of the Dresden Technology Collections with HELLERAU - European Centre for the Arts, Kunstagentur Dresden and Portraits Hellerau e. V.
The competition's major annual exhibition will once again take place at the Dresden Technology Collections and show contemporary photographic positions under the motto "Togetherness". Some works reflect the medical side of assistance, exhaustion, the consequences of loneliness and farewell. Others honour the power of human togetherness in general, the reunion after months of separation or interpret questionable rituals aimed at creating community. The exhibition extends from the large temporary exhibition space to the permanent exhibitions and into the tower of the Ernemann Building.
"The social, the political, the otherwise still current, the culture of remembrance and ultimately the human condition once again form the multifaceted background of the main current with the contributions that deal with the pandemic and its consequences. Art remains a democratic means of cognition. Humanity is a key word that is closely linked not only to togetherness, the theme of the Portraits - Hellerau Photography Award 2021, but also to the fascinating photographic discipline of portraiture, " says Polish photographer and PORTRAITS juror Tomasz Lewandowski.
26 artists from ten countries, including Yolanda del Amo (USA), Constanza Portnoy (Argentina), Sarah Mei Herman (Netherlands) and Tamara Eckhardt (Germany) are represented with works. Current series by Leipzig photographer Ingmar Björn Nolting (Vonovia Award for Photography 2020) and French-Polish photographer Tim Franco will also be on display.

The Portraits - Hellerau Photography Award 2021 is the most important international exhibition of photography in Saxony. On display are photos ranging from small format to panel painting size, quotes from traditional image forms and unusual perspectives on an eventful year. The PORTRAITS - Hellerau Photography Awards will be presented for the sixth time in 2021. The international photography competition offers prize money of €10,000. Several hundred photographers from countries including Brazil, Israel, Iran, Syria, Australia, Japan and South Africa have applied for one of the coveted Hellerau Photography Awards.
The project is supported by Tiefenbacher Rechtsanwälte, OBERÜBER KARGER Kommunikationsagentur GmbH, Stiftung Kunst und Musik für Dresden, Ilford Imaging, Pigmentpol Dresden, Fotokabinett Dresden and the cultural portal "Fotografie in Dresden".
